We test what moves and what does not.
Hands-on work that gets a stiff joint or a guarding muscle moving again, so the exercises that hold it there finally have something to work with.
What It Is
A joint that has stopped moving well, or a muscle that will not stop guarding, does not respond to being told to try harder. Manual Therapy is a licensed physical therapist changing that directly with their hands: joint mobilization, soft tissue work, guided stretch, aimed at one restriction found in your evaluation.
Here is the part most places leave out. Hands-on work alone is not a plan. It buys you range and it turns the pain down, and if nothing then loads that new range, your body goes back to the pattern it already knows. So it always sits inside a plan, never on its own.
You have probably had the good appointment that wore off by Thursday. That is not a failure of the hands. That is what happens when nobody follows the release with the retraining, in the same visit, while the range is still there.
Which is what happens here. The hands-on work opens the door, then you walk through it before you leave.
Hands-on, then the work that holds it
What It Helps
Stiffness does not stay put. You start moving around it without noticing, and the joints doing the covering are the ones that hurt next.

Questions, Answered
No. A massage is aimed at how you feel while you are on the table. Manual Therapy is aimed at one specific restriction your evaluation found, in a named joint or tissue, and it is followed by movement in the same visit so the change has a reason to stay. Different goal, different training.
Because hands-on work is the door, not the room. It gives you range and it turns the pain down. If nothing loads that range, your body settles back into the pattern it already knows and you are booking again. That is why manual therapy sits inside a plan with an endpoint instead of becoming a standing appointment.
It depends on your plan. Manual therapy is normally billed as part of a physical therapy visit rather than on its own. We will check your benefits for you before your first visit, so the cost is not a surprise you find out about later. Questions before then? Call us at (319) 382-2743 and a real person picks up.
