Lifestyle Medicine
Six pillars, one plan you helped write, and a clinician who is Lifestyle Medicine Certified.
Let us prevent, rather than react.
Lifestyle medicine is evidence-based care that uses behavior instead of a prescription pad. Sleep, food, movement, stress, connection, and what you are or are not drinking.
Natalie Johnston is Lifestyle Medicine Certified, and here it is not a line on a wall. It is why an evaluation for a sore hip also asks how you are sleeping.
Pain does not sit in one tissue politely. A nervous system running on five hours of sleep and a full inbox hurts more, heals slower, and holds gains worse.
The six pillars
- Nutrition. What you eat matters, and it matters to inflammation and healing, not just the scale.
- Physical Activity. Motion matters. Loaded tissue is stronger tissue, and how you move changes how you feel, not just how you look.
- Manage Stress. Your approach matters. Chronic threat keeps the nervous system on alert, and an alert system amplifies pain.
- Sleep. Quality and quantity both matter. Sleep is when repair actually happens.
- Social Connections. Who you spend time with, and how, matters more than most people expect.
- Risky Substances. Your approach matters. Nicotine, alcohol, and the rest change how tissue heals.
Why this side of health gets ignored
Nobody bills you for the conversation about your sleep, so most visits skip it.
It is worth naming the broader context, and naming it as context, not as a promise from this clinic. Public-health researchers have argued for years that most chronic disease in the United States traces back to lifestyle and environmental factors. That means diet, sedentary living, smoking, chronic stress, and environmental exposures.
One widely cited framing puts that at roughly 160 million Americans and about 78 percent of national healthcare spending (Hyman, Ornish and Roizen, 2009). That is a general finding about the country's health, not a result Motion Matters produced or an outcome we are predicting for you.
What we can tell you is narrower and more useful. These six levers are the ones you personally control. Most people have never been coached through a single one of them.
Lifestyle Health Assessments: six one-hour sessions
The program is six one-hour sessions, structured so change actually sticks instead of lasting three weeks.
- Initial session, one to two hours. A full assessment across all six pillars, including pain limitations, then SMART goals we set together. You leave with goals in writing, not intentions.
- Follow-up sessions, one hour. We work the categories that need coaching, teach the strategies, and give you homework to practice them. If sleep is the primary issue, you get a detailed, evidence-based sleep plan.
- Monthly, in person. Follow-ups are scheduled once a month, on purpose. The gap is where you practice.
- Biweekly check-ins. Phone, email, or Zoom between sessions, for the questions that come up and for the accountability that makes the difference.
Who this is for
You are the person who has already read the books, tried the app, and done the January reset that lasted until February. You do not need more information. You need somebody to build the plan around your actual week and then hold you to it.
None of this is urgent, which is exactly the problem. The habits that cost you the most are the ones that never make it onto a calendar.
